Narrative
Copenhagen 1919: A young worker is discovered unemployed and pregnant. He meets Dagmar, who runs an underground adoption agency. A strong bond is strengthened, but his world collapses when he discovers the shocking truth about his job. Denmark’s official submission to the 97th Academy Awards in 2025 in the Best International Feature Film category. I liked the promise that society would be as productive as an evening mestor, and not the people it destroys. However, telling the story through a pure victim character takes the film away from that goal. This is not social criticism, when all the bad is concentrated in one main villain, while all the others are justified by their good intentions. On the contrary, it should have shown that in such a cruel environment, villainy and compassion are not so easily distinguished. The tone of the film was also somewhat unusual – more melancholic than anything – which left the viewer indifferent to what was happening on screen.
