Last night the London Film Festival premiered Steve McQueen’s new film, Blitz

Follow the stories of a group of Londoners during the events of the bombing of the British capital in World War II. Saoirse Ronan and Harris Dickinson previously starred together in See How They Run (2022)..

The film can feel grand and epic at times, yet utterly localized and intimate at others as you move from sweltering London to intimate London street scenes, front rooms and a host of small shops and businesses

Simply outstanding. A young Elliott Heffernan giving a monumentally confident and sincere performance, Saoirse Ronan brilliant as always and a cast of much-loved British actors Stephen Graham, Cathy Burke, Benjamin Clementine and possibly my favorite lefty in recent history with Paul Weller playing the piano, lovely grandfather Hans Zimmer’s music too, with his absolute knack for letting you know something is about to happen, but you’re never quite sure what.

You see and hear no enemy, only bombs and air raid sirens to warn them

Full of fear and hope, singing in a dungeon to keep spirits up, sisterhood in a bomb factory, selfless heroes who care for those they don’t know (grab a tissue). The diversity in the film reflects what London was like in 1940 and you’ve never seen it like this on film before.

Best for viewing on a large screen with powerful sound

A constant timely reminder that those who divide society destroy it. I hope he gets what he deserves come awards season, a second directorial effort for SMQ is a definite possibility.

I can’t wait to see it again
